About
Welcome to the Growing Sustainability in the Arts web platform – the first university database in Switzerland that collects and publishes projects and activities in the arts and design related to sustainability. Growing Sustainability in the Arts promotes knowledge exchange, networking, and sustainable practices in the arts and design.
Growing Sustainability in the Arts Platform
The platform presents a comprehensive collection of groundbreaking sustainability projects and activities in the arts and design from the areas of teaching, research, and knowledge transfer at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). It features outreach projects, degree projects, teaching projects, and research projects developed by talented students, dedicated researchers, and renowned experts. The database can be searched in various ways (keywords, themes, groups, and individuals).
The Funding section includes an extensive list of funding institutions in Switzerland that support sustainability-related projects in the arts and design. These institutions offer various forms of support (scholarships, competitions, grants, or spaces to promote innovative and future-oriented projects). The database enables searching for funding bodies along key dimensions (e.g. social, ecological, economic, education, or culture).
About the Glossary
The glossary explains selected terms that are relevant to sustainability in the arts and design and related to the projects presented on the platform. The selection is not exhaustive nor can the glosses fully capture the complexity of the terms and concepts. The texts should be seen as a starting point: they invite readers to further explore and critically reflect on the issues presented and are intended to stimulate discussion. Although the glossary seeks to approach the terms and concepts as objectively as possible and to adhere to general lexical definitions, it refers primarily to a European socio-cultural and historical context. As language is culturally, socially and historically constructed and constantly evolving, the glossary is reviewed and updated on a periodic basis.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
ZHdK is committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, which Switzerland has endorsed through its Agenda 2030. ZHdK aligns its culture of sustainability with the SDGs. Allocating the projects hosted on the Growing Sustainability in the Arts platform to the SDGs places them in a global context and enables quickly establishing how each project contributes to achieving specific SDGs. Hosting the projects also promotes consciously engaging with these goals and emphasizes how art and design can contribute to achieving them.
Project Submissions
The Growing Sustainability in the Arts platform invites all current and former ZHdK staff and students to submit sustainability projects in the fields of teaching and research, as well as degree projects. Please use our online form. Submissions are reviewed at the beginning of each semester (February and September) and must meet clearly defined Sustainability Criteria to be uploaded to the platform.
Support and Information on Research
The following ZHdK information on research is general and not exclusively related to sustainability. The ZHdK has set up a public database for research projects in general. The "fundingZ" database offers a wide selection of research funding organizations. In the field of innovation funding, these organizations provide support.
